African american case study Essay David Brown is a 35-year-old African American residing in Brooklyn, New York. He is tall, lean, and professional-looking. He has short curly hair and neatly shaved face. He has been a successful bank manager for five years and his colleagues look up to him with much respect and admiration. But whatever he has now are the fruits of his hardwork and perseverance. David was born on the 25th of February 1972. During this time, racial discrimination was still prolific and their family experienced hard times. They live in the â€Å"ghetto† where drugs, gang wars, and poverty were rampant. Growing up in such an environment was never easy for David and he found it hard to trust his peers because he did not want to get involved in their vices. His mother had to stay at home to attend to his other siblings while his father had two jobs to support their family’s needs. Considering their situation, David was inspired to study hard and he wanted to give his family a better life. After graduating from highschool, he was determined to pursue college and was fortunate enough to be accepted in a known university to study Banking and Finance. College was the biggest challenge for him because first of all, his father had to support him and he had to work as a grocery clerk in a convenient store at night to make ends meet. Due to the color of his skin, David faced discrimination issues. His classmates regarded him as inferior and some even ridiculed him and his peers who were also African Americans. Whenever he felt down and mocked, he would play basketball because this was his outlet in releasing tension and built-up emotions. However, he did not lose his focus and he graduated with flying colors. It took him a while to land on a job since some of the employers were discriminating. After several months, he got a job offer from a banking company as a clerk. He was very happy because he was starting to fulfill his dreams of helping his family. He worked hard and loved this noble profession and eventually, his efforts were seen by his superiors. His determination and dedication made him climb the corporate ladder. Many got insecure and envious when he was promoted to his present managerial position. Some even doubted his leadership skills and capabilities in performing his duties but, David proved them wrong. In time, he was able to win their support and respect.   David is currently at the prime of his life – he is successful and has given his family a better life. He does not have any intimate relationships because he prioritizes his family and work. Considering Erikson’s psychosocial theory of development, David has gone through young adulthood and it appears that his lack of initiative to form intimate relationships lead to isolation. However, he could only be delayed in establishing intimate relationships with the opposite sex because of prioritization of other more important things. As of now, he is in his middle adulthood and it is most likely that he is experiencing psychological stagnation since he is not showing productivity in helping the next generation achieve their goals. Taking Freud’s theory of psychosexual development into consideration, David appears to be fixated in the latency stage because of his self-fulfilling goals and the direction of his energy towards productive activities like work. Though he knows how to socialize, most of his friends are males and he exhibits lack of interest in engaging in close relationships with women (Santrock, 2002). At this point, he should have been married like most people of his age and rearing a family of his own; but as mentioned earlier, David may only be delayed in fulfilling such human functions. Thesis: The Roanoke colony proved to be an unsuccessful venture in the New World for England, since leaders of the expedition held the viewpoint that privateering would prove to be the most profitable aspect of founding the new settlements in the West. However future, still unsuccessful attempts to make a permanent colony at Roanoke, helped England understand how to build a prosperous one; and it became a building block for establishing future colonies for England and helped shape the ideas that would help launch their empire. Summary: This book starts well before Roanoke was founded. It detailed how, at the time, England was not a superpower. Spain and France were the most dominant of the European countries, but internal conflicts in France made it weak, while Spain was getting extremely wealthy off of Indians and the Aztecs. England saw this as an opportunity to expand into the New World, and had Walter Raleigh head the trip. The main goals of the colony were to expanding their efforts of privateering, with a sustainable colony as an after thought. It was initial devised as a way to intercept merchant ships more effectively from other countries (mainly Spain) and be a short-term base of operations. Most if not all of the men brought over had only military experience, so they struggled with building proper housing, getting clean water, and growing crops. Ultimately, conflict erupted when the Indians grew weary of giving such a large amount of supplies to the colonists, and many high ranking officials died on the Indian side. The settlement was abandoned due to lack of supplies. After this unsuccessful attempt, John White lead another group intended to be a permanent settlement to Roanoke, and the prototype of plantations he u... ...ue detailing what Ralegh and White did after the Roanoke colonies. To sum up my opinions, this book was not only an excellent read from a scholarly perspective, but is also great for anyone to read if they are interested in the early colonization efforts of the New World and how it functioned. I would, however, not advise anyone to read this without having some background information on Western European powers and knowledge of Indian tribes in the mid to late 16th century. Through the plot complications, character development and dramatic techniques these themes can be explored. In the play deception is shown on both good and evil sides, the game of love between Beatrice and Benedick and the Don John plot to split up Hero and Claudio. Perception is a theme used in most of Shakespeares plays. Perceptive views by the characters help portray the game of love. Hero is perceived as dead which then Claudio is sorry and feels for her. She had guts, for a Portuguese bitch, and he twisted to one side to avoid the lunge of the bayonet In the film, Teresa relies on Sharpe more, she is more like a normal woman and she waits for Sharpe to come and save her. This again makes Sharpes character look heroic. She also wears more womanly clothes in the film; this is done to appeal to males. The actress playing Teresa is also older than I had expected. I dont think the character of Teresa was cast very well. Teresa has a smaller part in the film than she does in the novel and most of her scenes were changed. This made the film worse than the novel. Knowles was not included in the book; the reason for this was that the scriptwriter maybe didnt think that it was necessary to employ an actor for only one or two scenes. Also, Knowles dies and this wasnt shown in the film. This was probably because the film was rated PG and was shown before the 9pm watershed. Another person who was not included was Leroy. He wasnt included because his character was American and British people might not have wanted to see an America man fighting with the English and making out that he was also a hero. The language in the novel and the language in the film were also very different. The Officers language was more formal in the novel. The language on screen has been made more up to date and modern. This is so people can understand the language and can watch the film instead of having to think what the character was saying, meanwhile losing track of the film. There is no swearing in the film because it is a PG. This takes away the effectiveness because, if men were fighting and people were trying to rape their wives they would swear. There is more use of Spanish and French in the film. Subtitles can be used whereas, in a book, you cant have subtitles. This makes the film more effective because it is all about an army attacking the French and the Spanish to get to a place in Spain (Badajoz). Music is used instead of description in some places. I dont think this is very effective because you dont usually realise the music is there unless it is very powerful. Sometimes the music was good because it related to what was going on. Other times the music didnt seem to relate at all. The makers of the film Sharpes Company would have encountered many problems during filming including characters, setting, audience and technicalities. Characters: The casting would have been a problem, getting actors who fitted the description of characters in the book. I dont think they overcame this very well with a few of the characters. Setting: It would have been extremely expensive to construct sets like those described in the novel. The set would have to be in a believable location. They couldnt have chosen Badajoz today because it is a modern town which looks nothing like it did in the war. Also, cast and crew couldnt be moved very far because of expenses. Audience: The audience also played a very big part in the filming. No sex, violence or swearing because of the PG rating and the watershed. Sean Bean was cast to attract women and the theme of fighting attracted men. I have considered everything and my main reason for choosing the novel over the film is that the novel is more descriptive and exiting. Even though there was more waiting in the novel, the end result was better. The characters were completely different to what I had imagined, especially Hakeswill. None of the gory parts could be shown in the film, which made it less exiting. I think it would be worth including all of the swearing and the gory bits and making the film an 18, this would make the film as good as the novel, if not better.
